The Kwanzaa Spirit Awards recognize and celebrate individuals who exemplify the essence of Kwanzaa by embodying its seven core principles and fostering positive change within the community. Join us in honoring these outstanding community members for their dedication and impactful contributions.
Each award represents one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Nominees should demonstrate qualities that embody these values:
Unity (Umoja)
Criteria: Promotes unity in the family, community, nation, and race. Demonstrates inclusiveness, encourages collaboration, and fosters a sense of togetherness.
Self-Determination (Kujichagulia)
Criteria: Exemplifies self-reliance, accountability, and the courage to define and achieve one’s goals. Shows a commitment to personal growth, independence, and empowerment.
Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima)
Criteria: Actively participates in the community’s welfare, works toward shared goals, and shows a willingness to take responsibility for challenges facing the community. Embraces teamwork and the spirit of shared support.
Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa)
Criteria: Supports economic growth within the community through mutual assistance. Promotes local businesses, advocates for economic equality, and invests time and resources to uplift others.
Purpose (Nia)
Criteria: Driven by a strong sense of purpose and dedication to the betterment of family and community. Strives to build and support institutions and programs that enrich the lives of others.
Creativity (Kuumba)
Criteria: Brings creativity and innovation to community life. Uses talents to make the community more vibrant, engaging, and inspiring, showing a passion for arts, ideas, or new approaches that benefit everyone.
Faith (Imani)
Criteria: Demonstrates a deep faith in people, ideals, and progress. Inspires hope and optimism, encourages belief in self and others, and fosters trust and confidence within the community.
Eligibility
Nominees must be community members, groups, or organizations actively engaged in work that reflects one or more of the Kwanzaa principles.
Submission
Nominations should include a brief description (250-500 words) detailing how the nominee embodies the specified Kwanzaa principle(s).
Review
A committee will evaluate all nominations based on adherence to the principle’s characteristics, overall impact, and commitment to community welfare.
